The five-year grant came to fund a total of 250 excellent programs from 95 universities. Topics related to robotics and mechatronics are treated in the following programs: (1) \u201cInformation Science and Technology Strategic Core,\u201d University of Tokyo; (2) \u201cIntelligent Human Sensing,\u201d Toyohashi University of Technology; (3) \u201cInnovation of Creative Engineering through the Development of Advanced Robotics,\u201d Tokyo Institute of Technology; (4) \u201cMicro- and Nano-Mechatronics for Information-Based Society,\u201d Nagoya University; (5) \u201cCOE for Research and Education on Complex Functional Mechanical Systems,\u201d Kyoto University; (6) \u201cParadigm Shift from Intelligence to Life,\u201d Keio  University; (7) \u201cHuman Adaptive Mechatronics (HAM),\u201d Tokyo Denki University; and (8) \u201cThe Innovative Research on Symbiosis Technologies for Human and Robots in an Aging Society,\u201d Waseda University. All of these programs were completed by March 2008. <\/jats:p>\n\t\t\t<jats:p>  Our editorial board has decided that the time is right to organize a special issue on MEXT 21<jats:sup>st<\/jats:sup> Century Programs to disseminate these invaluable  research findings as widely as possible. Our three guest editors \u2013 Prof. Yasuyoshi Yokokohji of Kyoto University, Prof. Masamitsu Kurisu of Tokyo Denki University, and Prof. Hiroyasu Iwata of Waseda University \u2013  have all worked in the specialized areas featured here.
