Optimum fresh weight values were obtained with nitrate at 46.4 m<jats:italic>M<\/jats:italic>. Ammonium inhibited growth at concentrations above 2.15 m<jats:italic>M<\/jats:italic>, and kinetin had no significant effect. Significant interaction between nitrate and ammonium effects on growth was found. Kinetin did not interact significantly with either nitrate or ammonium to influence the fresh weight. The specific activity of glutamate dehydrogenase (NAD) in the aminating reaction increased with increasing ammonium concentrations to 21.5; at higher concentrations the activity remained high. Glutamine synthetase specific activity was constant over a large range of nitrate and ammonium concentrations, increasing only when nitrate went from 46.4 to 100 m<jats:italic>M<\/jats:italic>. Glutamine synthetase was sensitive to the nitrate: ammonium interaction. Specific activity decreased at progressively higher ammonium levels when nitrate concentration increased. It also clarifies the distinction between the many\noften misleading terms used to refer to bilingual preference (i.e., a bilingual's language\nchoice). The children's fluctuating bilingual preference is accounted for in terms of three\ncontextual domains: home, school, and community. The home domain was predominantly\nFrench-speaking, while the community domain shifted between predominantly English-speaking\nLouisiana and French-speaking Qu\u00e9bec. The 10-year-old identical twin girls were in a\nFrench immersion program in Louisiana during the entire three-year period; their 12-year-old\nbrother was not. A new, domain-sensitive longitudinal measure \u2013 the bilingual preference\nratio (BPR) \u2013 was created and applied for each child using 36 months of weekly tape\nrecordings of mealtime conversations. BPR fluctuations indicate that the greatest effect on the\nchildren's language preference was community immersion in the target language.\nHowever, the twins' markedly greater preference for speaking French at home in\nLouisiana is attributed to the influence of French immersion at
